As Theodore Levitt said, “people do not want a quarter-inch drill, they want a quarter inch hole.” Yet many companies innovate by trying to improve their existing products and services (creating a better quarter-inch drill) instead of trying to find better ways to create a quarter-inch hole (to get the real job done). Jobs-To-Be-Done is a concept of identifying customer needs (pains and gains), which are often not explicitly stated. When we spend time to immerse ourselves in our customers and their environments, explore existing problem workarounds, and conduct insightful customer conversations, we pave the way for stronger design effects. In this session, you will learn how understanding emotional, personal, and social Jobs-To-Be-Done increases the odds of making customer lives easier via outstanding solution experiences. You will also practice two simple customer interview techniques that will help you re-frame your present perception of the customer problems, and lead to more meaningful results.

Walking a Mile in their Moccasins… Building to this Native American concept of empathy, we utilize SKIP cards from Australia to help workshop participants absorb the basis of design thinking – truly understanding our clients, customers, staff and other stakeholders before presenting solutions to whatever problems. Organizations tend to bring pre-determined concepts to most projects but only through being aware of human cognitive biases and stakeholders’ realities can actionable concepts be devised for the real humans that designers seek to serve. In this short workshop, participants adapt their first ideas for addressing a key problem – and hence identifying their confirmation biases – as they dwell ever deeper into the human side of the issue.

Let's say that out of the blue you hear about design thinking... and you wonder: what is it? how does it work? what do you get out of it?
And if you read a lot and watch tons of videos online you get a lot, but what you miss is actually doing it.
So let's do it. We designed an experience for you: it's doing to learn it rather than learning to do it. Together, we'll go through a full cycle of the design thinking process working on a real problem of actual people and designing a real solution for them. At the end of the day, you'll be able to take at least three basic tools back to your work or life. Together with a mindset that can transform everything that you touch. And an opener to practice: design is doing!
